What does 4K Mean to You

SoFlo custom electronics & design integration firm demystifies the new TV technology

Sony 4k lifestyle

Welcome back!

We’ve noticed that 4K TVs are slowly coming to market in force, with more major manufacturers announcing new products all the time. The latest (and perhaps most enthusiastic) is Sony, and Media Design Associates is taking the opportunity of our latest blog to get into the (high resolution) details…

What’s the difference (between 1080p and 4K resolution)?

A High Definition TV with 1080p resolution is composed of two million pixels (1920 x 1080), while a 4K TV (aka Ultra High Definition) has over eight million pixels (3840 x 2160). Therefore, 4K has around four times more resolution than 1080p and produces a clearer picture.

Sony was the first to market a 4K video player for its 84 inch Ultra High Definition (HD) TVs and announced the world’s first 4K video distribution service. The availability of 4K in 55-inch and 65-inch models is an entirely new development, as the price point for either is considerably less than half the cost of the 80+ inch models.

What makes Sony different?

Like all 4K TVs, Sony brings 4x the resolution of a full HD TV. Unlike other manufacturers, Sony is providing content in addition to the components, with 4K films available for media players supporting high-resolution and a streaming movie service.

The 4K Ultra HD resolution TVs use a technology unique to Sony called Triluminos Display that promises a wide palette of realistic colors. The TV also features integrated NFC technology to make it easy to mirror the screen of your compatible smartphone or tablet with a touch.

That feature makes it easy to get content from your mobile device onto the big screen in your living room.

On TV sets, it’s easy to focus only on the picture and forget about the sound. But sound is an integral part of the movie and TV watching experience and Sony uses a technology to improve the sound experience on the 4K Ultra HD TVs as well. One of those technologies is a unique Signal-to-Sound architecture Sony says it designed specifically to make sounds more realistic without overwhelming the dialogue in your favorite movies or TV shows.

Will movies and shows from regular cable and entertainment systems appear different in 4K?

High Definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) content such as TV shows, DVDs, Blu-ray Disc® movies, and Internet streamed movies or videos will appear better when viewed with a Sony® 4K TV. This is due to the 4K X-Reality™ PRO Picture engine, an exclusive up scaling technology of Sony TVs that enhances and refines picture quality from all sources.

A significant draw, as films take time catch up to the 4K process, will be the gaming. The more interactive the experience, the more likely a user will leave the sofa and come within six feet of their television. As soon as that happens, regular 1080 HD content stops delivering the pixel-free experience gamers are accustomed to on modern devices. 4K, on the other hand, delivers pixel-free viewing from as close as four feet even on a 65” panel…and it will look amazing.

In addition, Sony Pictures is releasing films like After Earth in 4K Digital Cinema and investing in 4K restorations of classics like Lawrence of Arabia and Taxi Driver.

Important points to keep in mind:

When viewing a large TV, it is usually recommended that you have a large theater room and sit a good distance away. However, due to the enhanced picture quality of the 4K TV, the recommended viewing distance when watching the TV is approximately 7 feet from the sitting area. Each room or viewing environment is different, so the recommended viewing distance may not be best in every situation.

Once you purchase the TV, we recommend trying it in different areas or moving the furniture around to find the position that fits your personal needs and preferences. If mounting the TV on the wall of the room, your eyes should be about level with the middle of the screen when you are seated in your normal viewing position.

As always, if you ever have questions about the latest technology, don’t hesitate to contact Media Design Associates. We’re ready to go to work for you!
